My Town - Magnitogorsk

The Monument
“The First Tent”

The first 35 builders settled at Mountain Magnitnaya in the spring of 1929. While building the houses they lived in tents. The town’s first buildings were barracks, workshops, storehouses, bathhouses and clubs. On the basement of the monument the lines by Boris Ruchyov, a poet and one of the first builders of the town, are engraved.

The Monument “ The Rear to the Front”

The statue of a soviet soldier in Treptow Park in Berlin is well-known. The soldier is holding a child in one arm and is splitting the fascist swastika with a sword in the other hand. But only few people know that the sculptor, E.V.Vuchetich, chose Ivan Odarchenko, a soldier from Magnitogorsk, as his model. The monument “Motherland” on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd is a statue of a woman, a mother, holding the same sword high above her head. This sword, the weapon that defeated fascism, was made here in the Ural region of Russia. In Magnitogorsk on a 18-meter hill near the river is the third part of the sculptural ensemble, the monument “The Rear to the Front”.

The Monument “ The Rear to the Front”

The steelworker is giving the sword made of Magnitogorsk steel to the soldier. The soldier is looking to the west where the front was, where on the fields of action of the Great Patriotic War people fought for the freedom of our motherland. Their victory was to a certain degree ensured by the dedicated workers of the rear because every second tank was protected with Magnitogorsk armour and every third projectile was from Magnitogorsk steel.

The statue was erected on the town’s 50th birthday, thus completing the unique heroic ensemble with a sword in sculptural art. The three monuments were designed by one architect, Y.B.Belopolsky, a Lenin Prize winner and an Honoured Master of the Arts.

The Town’s Clock Tower

At the top of the 29-meter tower in front of the Town Hall in the center of Magnitogorsk there is a clock made by Armenian specialists. The diameter of the clock-face is 3,5 meters.

The Ice Palace

The Ice Palace, where the matches of the Russian Hockey League and the European League take place, admits 3500 spectators. The number of “Metallurg” fans in our town is larger of course, so not every one can get a ticket.

“Metallurg”

“Metallurg” is the name of the town’s Hockey team. They have shown to quite a number of  hockey clubs of the world that they are not to be trifled with in competition.

The Bridge across the River Ural

The River Ural, the geographical borderline between Europe and Asia, divides the town into two parts. A lot of the town’s citizens live in Europe and go to work to Asia every day!

Magnitogorsk Steel Plant (MMK)

The Steel Plant, often called “the steel heart of Russia”, is in the Asian part of the town on the left bank of the River Ural. It is best seen from the other bank which is much higher.

Magnitogorsk Steel Plant (MMK)

In its shape the Steel Plant looks like a gigantic cruiser with numerous smokestacks.

MMK

They certainly don’t make the ecological life of the town happier.

Karl Marx Avenue

Karl Marx Avenue is one of the longest streets and the central line in the planning of the town.
